St. Augustine has special appeal for artists—the scenery, the weather, and it's historic character are all of appeal to an artistic soul. And galleries and museums representing their work abound in the oldest city.

With the popularity of monthly showcase events such as First Friday Artwalks and Uptown Saturday Night, the gallery scene is hot in St. Augustine.

From 5 to 9 p.m. on the First Friday of every month, continuing through the entire weekend, join the festivities as St. Augustine's art galleries open their new shows with refreshments and live music. Parking is available at several locations and complimentary Art Trains run every 15 minutes. Featuring original art by American and International artists with emphasis on contemporary French painters, this colorful gallery features more than 5,000 square feet of exhibition space in the heart of historic downtown. Permanent collection includes limited-edition signed lithographs from the Absolut Vodka advertising campaign by Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, Joyce Tenneson, George Rodrigue, and many more. They also carry a wide range of lithographs, posters, fine art prints, and stained glass, and feature changing exhibitions.

Featuring the work of regional artists, this charming gallery is located on historic Aviles Street in the heart of Old Town. Housed in a building dating from the late 1800s, Aviles Street Gallery is just two blocks from the main plaza. Select from oil or watercolor paintings, photography, and pen and ink drawings, mostly focusing on local themes. Handcrafted jewelry is also a focus. Member of Art Galleries of St. Augustine (AGOSA). Open till 9 p.m. for First Fridays featuring new shows and light refreshments.

Housed in a former auto show room and service garage, this cooperative gallery features the work of 13 dynamic contemporary artists. Now the only oil changes that are made are when an artist sells as painting. The emphasis is on affordable original art as opposed to reproductions. Recently voted the city’s best gallery, Butterfield Garage’s featured member artists include: founder Jan Miller (mixed media) and painters Ted Head, Angelika S. Luginbuhl, Sydney McKenna, and Stephanie Shieldhouse.

Inspired by dreamwork, nature, and meditation, Worley Faver handbuilds exquisite pots using techniques that closely resemble those used by the ancient Puebloan cultures of the American Southwest. Faver’s pots are burnished and textured, rarely glazed, and fired in flames and wood embers to amazing effect. Faver is happy to chat while he works in this cozy studio-gallery, which also features paintings by Jean Wagner Troemel, noted for her portraits, landscapes, townscapes, and seascapes.
